Sultry Hot Cocoa

Ah, Valentine’s Day: Chocolate, flowers...romantic dinners at overly-crowded restaurants.

While we aren’t really into romantic dinners that involve bumping elbows with the table next to us, we are into chocolate and flowers. And let’s be real, it doesn’t have to be a holiday to justify treating yourself to some chocolate and flower-y treat (it does support the ECS, after all!).

But, in the spirit of Valentine’s day, we have created a hot cocoa recipe that is chocolate-y, comforting, and even has roses in it!

Cacao’s scientific name name (Theobroma cacao) translates to “food of the gods”, which seems fitting given all of its health benefits, including that it:

  • is a mood enhancer: cacao is correlated with elevated levels of serotonin and dopamine, which promotes elevated mood and sexual arousal

  • contains anandamide: anandamide is an endocannabinoid known as the “bliss chemical” that supports your ECS

  • contains phenylethylamine: known as the “love-molecule,” phenylethylamine is a chemical that is also released by the brains of people in love and post-coital bliss

  • contains magnesium: cacao is high in magnesium, which is a mineral many people are deficient in that helps promote relaxation

Maca is a great:

  • source of omega 3 fatty acids: an important nutrient that our bodies use to make their own endocannabinoids

  • adaptogen: Maca is an adaptogen, which means it helps the body adapt to stress and promotes balance throughout; maca specifically has been shown to support the adrenal glands, helping the body cope with stress and ease the nervous system

  • libido booster: Maca helps to balance sex hormone production and can help with sexual dysfunction; it can help improve sexual desire for up to 6 weeks after ingestion!

In addition to cacao and maca, Rose:

  • is a potent aphrodisiac: the scent of Rose has been used as an aphrodisiac for centuries, especially the essential oil

  • promotes relaxation: rose is rich in the terpene myrcene, which has anti-depressant,relaxing, and calming properties, and rose can support the nervous system

Finally, Star Anise is an herb that is rich in

About the Recipe

This Sultry Hot Cocoa recipe has been formulated with ingredients that are meant to enhance your mood, relax your body, and boost your libido (and of course support your ECS!). Cacao, rose, and maca are the power ingredients in this romantic drink. We highly recommend romancing yourself while you sip: light some candles, get cozy, maybe even give yourself (or your sweetie) a massage.

However you choose to indulge, we hope you enjoy!

  1. Heat ½ c water over stove in a small saucepan on medium heat until it starts to boil

  2. While your water is heating up, put all of the dry ingredients into the bottom of your mug

  3. Pour water into mug and mix well (if you have a frother, this is a great tool to use!)

  4. Add milk to saucepan over low heat; when it is almost boiling, remove from heat

  5. Pour milk into mug

  6. Top it off with marshmallows or whipped cream if you desire

  7. Enjoy!

  • 1 tsp cacao powder

  • 1 tsp maca powder

  • 1/2 c water

  • 1/2 c milk of choice (We love cashew, almond, or hemp milks!)

  • 1-2 tsp sweetener of choice (we like to use Potli’s CBD infused honey)

  • Optional: 1/2 tsp rose powder (rose powder doesn’t easily dissolve and can make the drink have a slightly grainy texture—omit if you prefer!)

  • Optional: 1 Star Anise

* Please Note: Rose typically doesn’t come in powder, we use a coffee grinder to turn dried rose petals into a powder. You can also use whole rose petals as is or make some rose tea, strain it, and add the rose infused hot water to the drink. You can also omit the rose completely and add something else (cinnamon is delicious in it as well)!

Opportunities for Cannabinoid Infusion

If you'd like to enhance this recipe with cannabinoids, consider using one of the products below. We recommend using between 5-30mg of CBD per serving, depending on your needs and body weight (typically 1-5mg of CBD per 10 lbs of body weight). Remember to always start low and go slow when it comes to cannabinoids, and be sure to read our CBD Safety article and talk to your doctor before incorporating something new into your routine.

Potli CBD Honey

To enhance this recipe with cannabinoids, consider substituting some or all of the honey in each recipe for Potli’s CBD honey.

Potli CBD honey is a full-spectrum product made from hemp grown in Kentucky without pesticides, fertilizers, or chemicals. Their CO2 extracted CBD is then blended with Grade A wildflower honey harvested by hand from their own bees in the Bay Area of California. This female-owned company is passionate about “empowering you to experience and enjoy life your way” by creating products designed to help you live a high-functioning life.

1 tablespoon of Potli’s CBD honey is approximately 10 mg CBD. When substituting infused honey for regular honey, be aware of how many mg CBD are in each portion of the recipe you are making. The standard dose of CBD is 10mg, but varies based on tolerance, reason for use, severity of condition, etc., and can be used at regular dosages as high as 50mg or more. We always recommend starting small and working up as needed to cut down on overall costs of using CBD as medicine.
