Hempsley's Relationship with PrestoDoctor

Hempsley Founder, Kristen, met PrestoDoctor co-founder Rob Tankson at an educational event that she spoke at in California back in summer of 2016, and she immediately noticed how professional, respectful, and kind he was. They kept in touch after the event to share some of the educational materials Kristen was working on at the time, and when PrestoDoctor expanded to Missouri last year, Rob remembered that Kristen was there and reached out to see if she would be interested in trying their service.

Kristen used PrestoDoctor to get her Missouri Medical Marijuana Patient License in February 2020 and used their service to renew her license again in 2021. Click here to read about her experience.

Introducing PrestoDoctor

PrestoDoctor is an online telemedicine service created specifically for people to get their medical marijuana cards. They served their first patient in California in May of 2015, and have since expanded to Oklahoma, Nevada, New York, Missouri, Pennsylvania, Illinois, and Iowa!

Telemedicine uses technology to offer long-distance diagnosis and treatment for patients, often over video-chat. This allows patients to have a doctor’s visit from the comfort of their own home, which can be beneficial if it’s difficult to travel due to a handicap or illness. This is also a good option for busy patients, or for those who simply feel overwhelmed in a clinical setting (something quite common!). When it comes to cannabis, telemedicine offers complete discretion; no one except for you, your doctor, and the state ever need to know about your medical marijuana card application.

Even though many states now have medical marijuana programs, it can still be hard to find a doctor willing to prescribe cannabis.

The History of PrestoDoctor

When Rob went to get his medical marijuana card in California years ago, he visited a doctor on the beach. The experience, Rob said, was not professional — and he began thinking about people like his mother and grandma back in the midwest who would not feel comfortable seeing a doctor on the beach for a medical marijuana prescription. This inspired Rob to think about how he could make a better experience for patients.

Rob grew up in Chicago, then moved to San Francisco in 2006. He had worked as an equity research analyst on Wall Street before moving on to the tech industry as an analyst at Google. Through work, he met Kyle Powers, a software engineer who grew up in South Dakota and moved to San Francisco in 2011. With both of their backgrounds in the technology industry, it only made sense for Rob and Kyle to create a telemedicine service — and PrestoDoctor was established in San Francisco in 2014.

They served their first patient in California in May of 2015, and have since expanded to Nevada, New York, Oklahoma, and Missouri.

In 2017, Cannabis Sativa, Inc. acquired a 51% stake in PrestoDoctor, a company with many brands beneath it. When we asked Rob what made them want to partner with Cannabis Sativa, Inc., he said that they were a very supportive but hands-off group that trusted them to do good work while also contributing their own expertise and connections in the cannabis space. Ultimately, partnering with this group allowed PrestoDoctor to grow and expand to new states.

What exactly is telemedicine?

What makes PrestoDoctor unique?

First and foremost, PrestoDoctor puts the patient’s experience above all else. With a relatively small team of just 8 employees and 24 doctors across their 5 different states, PrestoDoctor truly cares about their patients. The support team answers any and all questions in a timely matter, and they hand-select doctors that have experience with and are comfortable recommending cannabis; their doctors can even create a treatment plan, and have done so with many people who want to get off of opiates. They don’t limit their free follow-up questions, so you can truly get the guidance you’re looking for — all from the comfort of your own home, and with a professional and knowledgeable doctor.

On top of their commitment to providing quality care, PrestoDoctor has truly perfected their online experience. Their website is easy to navigate, and guides the patient through every step of the process — all the way through a technology test to make sure that things will run smoothly. Kyle worked for both IBM and Google, and now maintains the PrestoDoctor site by himself — a site that, Rob says, is more secure than most doctors’ offices. They take their patients’ safety very seriously; PrestoDoctor is HIPAA and HITECH compliant, and I was even kindly reminded of this confidentiality during my appointment, putting me at ease for the video-chat with my doctor.

With over 10,000 5-star reviews, it’s obvious that PrestoDoctor has integrated everything they’ve learned over their past 5 years of being in business across multiple states to create a professional, easy, fast, and private experience for patients in Nevada, New York, Oklahoma, California, and Missouri to get the care they deserve.
