When it comes to healing herbs, Kiskanu is an expert.

We were introduced to Kiskanu in August 2017 at Canna Curious Club’s Friends in High Places event in Los Angeles — and it was love at first sight.

Kiskanu is not just a cannabis company. While they have a deep understanding of the cannabis plant, their knowledge extends much further into the world of plant medicine to make their formulas unique and powerful.

Kiskanu is a family owned and operated business.

Located in Northern Humboldt, CA, Kiskanu has over 20 years of experience in the cannabis industry. They are committed to quality and sustainability, crafting all of their products by hand in small batches while supporting organic farming methods. All of their ingredients are organic and lab tested, always sourcing US-grown hemp and using whole plant and solvent-free extracts in a base of cold-pressed, virgin, organic oils.

When we met Kiskanu, they were facilitating an essential oil blend bar to showcase their new line of THC products, available in medical dispensaries across the state. In fall of 2018, they launched a CBD-only line that could be sold nationwide — and we had the pleasure of debuting it at our massage station during the Heart of Health Exchange!

Let’s talk about topicals.

Topicals are applied to the surface of the skin to interact directly with that area for targeted effects. They are usually used for localized pain or soreness, inflammation, skin irritations, etc.

Unless a topical is labeled as “transdermal,” the CBD typically won’t reach the bloodstream because cannabinoids are generally too big to pass through the skin. This means that even if a topical has THC in it, you won’t get high. The cannabinoids do, however, permeate the skin through its pores and interact with endocannabinoid receptors in the skin.

Your body naturally produces endocannabinoids of its own that interact with these receptors to suppress inflammation and prevent the immune system from turning on when it is not needed. And if our bodies aren’t producing enough endocannabinoids of their own to support this system, we can supplement with phytocannabinoids.

Kiskanu’s Skin Rub is a mildly scented salve that is light on the skin yet deeply moisturizing.

This Skin Rub is a blend of CBD**, St. John’s Wort, comfrey, and lavender in a silky smooth base of cold-pressed olive, hemp, jojoba, and coconut oils, with beeswax to seal everything onto the skin and protect it from outside elements.

The quality of ingredients are of utmost importance when it comes to topicals (the largest organ in your body is your skin, after all!), and Kiskanu cuts no corners with their Skin Rub. Their base of all cold-pressed oils means that every oil retains its nutrients (such as vitamins and minerals) since it isn’t altered at all by heat or refining processes.

Here’s a breakdown of the benefits of each ingredient, as outlined by Kiskanu*:

  • CBD: a powerful anti-inflammatory and is known to enhance muscle relaxation and soothe nerve pain

  • hemp oil: an antioxidant that also has all 21 amino acids, which are vital to building healthy skin

  • St. John’s Wort: promotes nerve regeneration, especially after muscular overexertion

  • lavender: a known pain reliever with antifungal, antibacterial, and antispasmodic properties that can aid wounds, burns, and blemish healing

    • Lavender is rich in the terpene linalool, which is known for its calming effects and has antipsychotic, antiepileptic, and and anti-inflammatory properties

  • comfrey: promotes tissue repair and is anti-inflammatory

  • beeswax: seals the ingredients into the skin to protect it from outside elements so that it can work longer

  • MCT oil: increases bioavailability by enhancing permeation abilities and may help cannabinoids in bypassing the first metabolism process

Kiskanu suggests using their Skin Rub for dry skin, sore muscles, minor aches and pains, arthritic joints, and nerve pain, etc.* Some have also found that it can provide relief from insomnia.

Jillian, 5/5 Stars

I used the skin rub when I experienced soreness from exercise or tension from stress. I found the smell to be really pleasant and the texture is smooth and very easy to rub into the skin. I was experiencing a lot of soreness from exercise so I rubbed it into my legs and shoulders. I noticed quite a bit of relief within the hour, though the soreness wasn’t totally gone (and I didn’t expect it to be). When I had more mild tension/soreness the product brought a lot of relief and I felt much better.

Any tips you may have for others trying this product?

Overall, I think this is a great product for mild aches/pains and also great to add to a massage to bring extra relief to the body.

What star rating you would give it and why?

I would rate this product a 5/5 for the quality ingredients, the pleasant smell and texture and for the relief it provides.

Bethany, 4/5 Stars

Like other Kiskanu products, the Skin Rub has an incredible scent: earthy, calming, and balanced. I found this rub to be helpful for massage because of the consistency. It almost turns into an oil when warmed in your hands, but stays put wherever applied. It doesn’t have an “icy” feeling like some skin rubs, which I found pleasant, especially for my sensitive skin.

Any tips you may have for others trying this product?

I used Kiskanu Skin Rub exclusively on one section of eczema on my arm. I applied it once daily, every morning. I found that after a week, my skin was smoother. Although it didn’t clear up completely, the itching and irritation subsided after 10 minutes of the first application.

What star rating you would give it and why?

This Rub is recommended for muscle aches, but I felt indifferent about its effectiveness for sore muscles. Topically, it didn’t help for soreness, but it did aid in a more enjoyable massage. I would give this product 4/5 stars.

I was using the product to help with dry skin. I liked the smell; it smells natural and not like chemicals. You only need a little bit to rub on your skin; if you get too much it can leave skin oily. I could tell it was helping with dry skin the next day after using it. Left my skin much smoother than it had been. Within a couple of hours after it had fully absorbed, and I used it as needed rather than every day, but I could tell the difference each time on my skin. It has a consistent soothing effect on the skin.

Any tips you may have for others trying this product?

A little will go a long way, so start with a small amount on your skin and add more as necessary.

What star rating you would give it and why?

4 star rating because the product worked well and gave me the effect I was looking for, but also left my skin slightly oily for an hour or two after applying it.

Vinnie, 4.5/5 Stars

I was using the product to help with my dry skin, and also to heal little scratches and cuts on my hands and face from things like shaving. The rub made my skin feel so smooth, and it had a stronger but pleasant smell (when compared to the Kiskanu Face Oil). I used the skin rub as I saw necessary to help improve the health of my skin. After more consistent use of the skin rub, my hands and arms (main areas of application) showed noticeable improvement in smoothness even on days where I didn’t use the product.

Any tips you may have for others trying this product?

I would be careful with how much you initially apply to your skin. The first few times I used the product, I would sometimes take what I thought was a small amount, but it was much more than needed. It would leave my skin feeling oily if I used too much.

What star rating you would give it and why?

I would give the Kiskanu Skin Rub a 4.5 star rating because it is such a high quality product that I will continue to consistently use to take care of my skin.

Kristen, 4.5/5 Stars

I tried using this Skin Rub for my tense neck and shoulders, menstrual cramps, and my ridiculously dry hands (it was a rough winter). The first time I used it, I was obsessed with the silky texture and light aroma. Most of the topicals I’ve tried have more “bitey” essential oils like peppermint, arnica, or wintergreen that produce a wonderful cooling sensation, but can be a problem when using on the hands (don’t want to touch your eyes/face with those oils!) or when I’m trying to lay down for bed and it gives me the shivers.

I found that this is really great for relaxing my neck and shoulder tension both during the day and before I lay down to go to sleep at night. One day after speaking to hundreds of guests at a conference for 10+ hours, my throat was feeling very sore so I gave myself a neck (and foot) massage with the Skin Rub and felt almost brand new the next morning. Unfortunately, I didn’t find that it worked well for my menstrual cramps, which are usually incredibly intense for 1 day then taper off. When it came to my dry hands, this was exactly what I needed. I found that it really locked in the moisture for up to a couple hours after applying it (as long as I didn’t wash my hands, but even then, some of it was retained) and the patch of skin peeling off my thumb and bleeding was better within just two days after using it, healing itself within the week.

Any tips you may have for others trying this product?

When you first apply this, it is a little greasy so beware of getting it on your clothes or papers! I find that after about 5 minutes, though, I don’t have to worry about touching things and leaving a mark, and the “greasiness” turns into a light, protective, and moisturizing barrier as I continue with my day.

What star rating you would give it and why?

I would give this Skin Rub 4.5/5 stars, missing that last .5 only because it didn’t aid with my menstrual cramps.
