Mullein has been used throughout history to soothe the respiratory system as a common folk remedy for coughs, colds, bronchitis, and asthma. Historically, dried mullein leaves were smoked for respiratory issues. Sheet masks have become a popular beauty indulgence, but a single mask can cost anywhere from $4-12 — so we decided to explore what exactly goes into making a facial mask and how we could make our own at home!
After exploring some different ingredients, we found that this recipe was a great moisturizing option for our own skin — but remember, everyone is different, so don't hesitate to explore ingredients to find a recipe that works for you!
When we started looking into the face masks on the market, we ultimately found that they are simply comprised of hydrating oils and sometimes a cleansing agent — plus some preservatives, if you're buying them off a store shelf (which we don't love putting onto our skin, our bodies' largest organ!).
After our own research and explorations, we found a favorite formula of our own. Below is a breakdown of the benefits of each of these ingredients so that you can understand how they work and what you may want to include or leave out of your own sheet mask recipe!
a humectant: helps retain and preserve moisture. When mixed with other ingredients, it helps them get locked into the skin.
anti-inflammatory: can soothe irritations and help reduce redness
antioxidant rich: protects skin cells from damage and can help reduce fine lines and wrinkles
an astringent: contracts and tightens skin tissues, helping shrink pores, tone skin, and remove surplus dirt and oil
antimicrobial: helps kill or stop the growth of harmful microorganisms
anti-inflammatory: can soothe irritations and help reduce redness
Vitamin E: a powerful antioxidant with anti-aging properties
Vitamin A: helps repair skin damage from sun exposure and aging
Omega 3 & Omega 6 Fatty Acids: keeps the skin hydrated and helps with skin growth

We love taking baths, but sometimes they can get a little dull. These little bars packed with magnesium-rich epsom salt are perfect for extra exfoliation in the winter or simply tossing into the bath to create a relaxing atmosphere while we soak. The epsom salt helps put our muscles at ease while the aromatic herbs settle our minds.
Epsom salt has been used for hundreds of years for health, skincare, gardening, household products, and more. Epsom salt is actually not a salt at all; it is "a pure mineral compound of magnesium and sulfate." Our bodies need magnesium to live and properly function.
muscles: magnesium relaxes the muscles by allowing them to function properly
stress: magnesium deficiencies are linked to higher levels of stress

We consulted many DIY dry-shampoo recipes and experimented until we found one that worked for us.
We've all heard that washing your hair every day can dry it out, but where does that leave us when our roots start feeling oily after just one day? Dry shampoos have become a popular beauty product, but after analyzing the ingredients list at a few in our local store we had no interest in putting them on our scalps — so we did a little research.
oil absorbent: arrowroot powder enhances the absorbency of our skin
volumizing: arrowroot powder has been used in lots of DIY "Root Lifting & Hair Volumizing" recipes
detoxifying: removes build up and other impurities on the scalp
moisturizing: conditions the hair for shine and softness, enhancing curl definition

Searching “how to get rid of a cold or flu” (AKA a virus) will get you a million suggestions, but as we all know, Dr. Google hasn’t put these ideas to the test — so we decided to do a little research about what makes some of the most popular natural remedies actually work. As we began taking a closer look at the most common suggestions out there such as lemon or ginger teas and Echinacea supplements, we realized that these plants all had something in common: they had terpenes with antiviral properties.
As we learned from our Introducing: Terpenes article, terpenes have therapeutic properties ranging all the way from anti-bacterial to anti-inflammatory and more. Turns out, there are also many terpenes with virus-fighting properties, including three of the four we focus on here at Hempsley: limonene, pinene, and linalool. Learn more about virus fighting terpenes here.

This Sultry Hot Cocoa recipe has been formulated with ingredients that are meant to enhance your mood, relax your body, and boost your libido (and of course support your endocannabinoid system!). Cacao, rose, and maca are the power ingredients in this romantic drink. We highly recommend romancing yourself while you sip: light some candles, get cozy, maybe even give yourself (or your sweetie) a massage.
However you choose to indulge, we hope you enjoy!
While we aren’t really into romantic dinners that involve bumping elbows with the table next to us, we are into chocolate and flowers. And let’s be real, it doesn’t have to be a holiday to justify treating yourself to some chocolate and flower-y treat (it does support the endocannabinoid system, after all!).
But, in the spirit of Valentine’s day, we have created a hot cocoa recipe that is chocolate-y, comforting, and even has roses in it!
is a mood enhancer: cacao is correlated with elevated levels of serotonin and dopamine, which promotes elevated mood and sexual arousal
contains anandamide: anandamide is an endocannabinoid known as the “bliss chemical” that supports your endocannabinoid system
contains phenylethylamine: known as the “love-molecule,” phenylethylamine is a chemical that is also released by the brains of people in love and post-coital bliss
contains magnesium: cacao is high in magnesium, which is a mineral many people are deficient in that helps promote relaxation
source of omega 3 fatty acids: an important nutrient that our bodies use to make their own endocannabinoids
adaptogen: Maca is an adaptogen, which means it helps the body adapt to stress and promotes balance throughout; maca specifically has been shown to support the adrenal glands, helping the body cope with stress and ease the nervous system
libido booster: Maca helps to balance sex hormone production and can help with sexual dysfunction; it can help improve sexual desire for up to 6 weeks after ingestion!
is a potent aphrodisiac: the scent of Rose has been used as an aphrodisiac for centuries, especially the essential oil
promotes relaxation: rose is rich in the terpene myrcene, which has anti-depressant,relaxing, and calming properties, and rose can support the nervous system
beta-caryophyllene: a terpene that interacts so strongly with the ECS that it may soon be reclassified as a cannabinoid; this compound helps soothe inflammation in the brain and gut

This recipe was developed by Rustic Supper based in Columbia, Missouri. These sweet holiday treats combine dates, peppermint, and coconut for a festive flair, then are then dipped in dark chocolate to boost the endocannabinoid system.
The holidays bring constant temptation… but we’re here to let you in on a little secret: dark chocolate can actually help support your endocannabinoid system!
These little guys combine dates, pecans and coconut for a festive flair, then they are dipped in peppermint-infused, antioxidant-rich dark chocolate to boost the endocannabinoid system. The compounds in dark chocolate work similarly to CBD; they slow the breakdown of our own endo-cannabinoids so that our bodies can use more of what they’re naturally producing. Check out our CBD Safety article to learn more!
antioxidants: help to prevent cell and tissue breakdown and help eliminate free radicals
flavanols: known to lower blood pressure and maintain the elasticity of blood vessels, which contributes to normal blood flow and heart function
provide energy: pecans are loaded with monounsaturated fat, which our body uses as a main source of calories
reduce cholesterol: studies show that pecans and other tree nuts can help lower cholesterol
antiviral: fights viruses and supports the immune system

This recipe was developed by Rustic Supper based in Columbia, Missouri.
This recipe may be simple in preparation, but it is extremely complex in flavor! There are few things better than a hot beverage during the holidays, and this “mulled” cider does not disappoint. We can’t wait to gather around the fire with our family and to use it as an opportunity to educate our loved ones about the wonder of terpenes!
During the 2nd century AD, the Romans began heating up their cider and wine and spicing it with ingredients such as cinnamon, cloves and cardamom. As they traveled, “mulled” wine spread to other European countries, becoming particularly popular during the Middle Ages when people drank them to stay warm in cold winters (Republic of Tea).
While we don’t believe in denying ourselves any indulgences, we also know that alcohol is recognized by the body as a poison. This means that our bodies put other physiological functions on hold while it works on getting the alcohol out of our system, throwing the body out of balance and creating a strain on our endocannabinoid system in the process. For this reason, we’re sharing how to make this warm beverage with cider rather than wine — but we fully support if you decide you want to try wine instead!
brain: caryophyllene can reduce chemicals in the brain that cause stress and inflammation, helping to protect the brain
digestive system: caryophyllene can reduce inflammation in the gut, supporting healthy digestion
anxiolytic: reduces anxiety to help produce feelings of calm and relaxation
sedative: can help improve sleep

Have you tried shrubs before? We're not talking about the bush in your garden, we're talking about drinking vinegar, or shrubs as they're sometimes called. Shrubs are a healthy and delicious way to incorporate more beneficial bacteria into your digestive system, and a great alternative to alcoholic cocktails. Tonight we're kicking back with a CBD-infused Beet Shrub.
Shrubs, or drinking vinegars date back as far as the 1500’s. Sekanjabin (sey-can-ja-bean) as it is known in Iran is perhaps the oldest known form of this type of drink, made from vinegar and honey.
This modern version combines three powerful anti-inflammatory digestion aids that also help to bring down blood sugar levels after a carb or sugar-loaded meal.
Anti-inflammatory effects thanks to gingerol, the main active ingredient in ginger root.
Aids digestion
Can lower blood sugar (especially after a carb or sugar-loaded meal)
Aid digestion
Contain betacyanin (the compound that give beets their red hue) which has anti-inflammatory properties

When we were growing up, there was a signature fruit dip recipe that our family would always make for all the big party occasions like New Year's Eve and Fourth of July. It had cream cheese, marshmallow fluff, and loads of sugar. With all the mouth-watering fresh fruit available in Columbia this summer, we were looking for a little extra something to put with our fruit — and whipped up this sweet summer treat.
What's summer without a sweet fruit treat? Check out the why behind our key ingredients:
protein: provides energy and is used to build bones, muscles, skin, and more
probiotics: can help boost the immune system and aid in gut health
calcium: used to build muscles and fuels organ function
Antioxidant: helps stop damage to cells that can cause diseases like cancer, heart disease, and more and reduces inflammation
Anti-inflammatory: reduces inflammation or swelling
Anti-inflammatory: reduces inflammation or swelling
Anti-bacterial: destroys bacteria. Because of this property, honey has been used to treat wounds

With the sick-season in full swing and a toddler running between their germ-infested preschool and our homes, it feels like we've been in an ongoing battle against illness for months now.
We've found that this is a great tea to help strengthen the immune system when someone in our space comes down with an illness — and if we do get sick, this tea has been great for soothing sore throats and coughs.
Limonene is a powerful terpene with anti-viral, anti-bacterial, anti-carcinogenic, antifungal, and anti-inflammatory properties.
When it comes to cannabis, this terpene is commonly found in strains such as Super Lemon Haze and OG Kush, both strains that are well-known for their stress-relieving effects. But for those of us without access to or interest in cannabis, there are TONS of other plants with limonene, including citrus fruits, eucalyptus, peppermint, juniper, rosemary, elderberry, and more — and all of these plants have a unique chemical makeup that can provide lots of therapeutic benefits!
Vitamin C: protects the immune system; aids in bone and collagen formation, healing wounds, and gum health

Most diets will tell you that you can't eat potatoes because they're loaded with starch. When it comes to the holidays, however, mashed potatoes are a staple — so we decided to make them a little bit healthier by infusing some rosemary into that decadent butter we would be adding. We also left the skin on our potatoes because they contain lots of nutrients, and with all the other yumminess in these you don't even notice them.
Throughout history, rosemary has been used as a medicine, cultural symbol, and in spiritual practices (Herbco, 2017). Today it is one of the most popular herbs available.
Pinene: a terpene that aids in memory retention and alertness. Rosemary has been shown to improve cognitive deficits and can support those with Alzheimer's disease
Antioxidants: helps stop damage to cells that can cause diseases like cancer, heart disease, and more
Fiber: supports digestive health, lowers cholesterol, helps you feel fuller longer and reduce appetite
Vitamin C: supports the immune system, aids in bone formation & wound healing, helps protect the body from infections
The skin on potatoes has tons more nutrients such as potassium, niacin, and iron.

This is a Thanksgiving-inspired spin-off of one of our favorite "healthy dessert" recipes, Hemp Protein Balls that has coconut, cacao powder, and peanut butter for a decadent, brownie-reminiscent treat.
We used cinnamon-infused butter left over from our Cinna-Butter recipe for the "frosting" on these little balls. Cinnamon is one of our favorite sources of the anti-inflammatory and relaxing terpene linalool!
Hemp seeds, also called "hemp hearts," are seeds from the hemp plant and are a great source of healthy fats, which allow our bodies to absorb all of the vitamins and nutrients they need.
Omega 3 fatty acid: helps with brain function, supports the cardiovascular system, fights inflammation
Omega 6 fatty acid: supports the brain, metabolism, and bone health, helps skin and hair growth, fights inflammation

The holidays are inevitably filled with tons of dinner parties — many of which include turkey/ham, mashed potatoes, and lots of bread — so we wanted to come up with a few unique spins on the classic recipes that would set our meals apart.
Grandma's rolls have always been a staple at holidays, and they were always served with an array of toppings such as apple butter, luxury jams, and, of course, butter. We figured we'd fill out the collection with some fresh, cinnamon-infused honey butter. Plus, we were able to use the leftovers to make these incredible Hemp Seed Pumpkin Truffles for a "healthy" dessert.
Cinnamon has been used as early as 2800 BC for anointment, embalming, and ailments (NCBI, 2015).

We're all about versatility, so after we infused rose petals with coconut oil to make our Rose & Eucalyptus Lip Balm, we started experimenting with other ways we could use the leftover infused oil. Coffee is one of those things we drink almost every day, so we're always looking for new ways to spice it up and add a little variety, and stumbled on this inspiring recipe by Local Milk Blog to make the delicious concoction you see here.
